Reframing family law: Using <scp>narratively‐informed</scp> lawyering to build an inclusive curriculum

This article describes a multi-layered family law clinic providing advice, counsel, and drafting assistance to returning citizens with child support related issues. As here, giving appropriate weight in the curriculum experiences of families marginalized by caste, race, other exclusionary dynamics requires moving beyond casebook-dependent teaching working across disciplines skill sets otherwise confined siloed groupings within legal education. The explains how innovative pedagogy, including sustained attention narrative relationship positions students deeply understand challenge many unjust aspects system, as well gain confidence their lawyering skills. Techniques discussed include process drama using an actor-teacher role client; social location work; work pleadings for citizen clients; use strength-based resilience dialogues. Adding growing chorus challenges blame-laden notions that expose Black Brown families, especially those who are poor, harsh sanctions, illustrates increased narratives relationships can energize needed change education criminal systems.
